Just as there is truth in the saying “it takes an entire village to raise a child”, it takes everyone to help promote and establish a safe community. And that is certainly true when it comes to fire safety, prevention, and preparedness.

It takes the collaborative effort of each and every community member, as well as every household, to prepare for and ensure that their community or home is safe from fire, and that everyone is fully prepared to act during a fire emergency.

However, a lack of urgency and diligence in emergency preparedness planning, including fire safety and prevention, exists in many households throughout the United States. This lack of preparedness comes with a steep price in lives lost, injuries suffered, disrupted lives, and billions of dollars in property damage every year.

Contrary to how fire is depicted on today’s popular television shows, Chicago Fire (NBC) and Station 19 (ABC), fire is “Black, Fast, and Deadly.” The swiftness, intensity, and deadliness of fire can easily overwhelm anyone, particularly if they are not trained on how to act in a fire emergency.

The “it won’t happen to me” mentality about fire that exists in many households just doesn’t work anymore and is entirely inadequate in preparing homeowners and their families to respond to and stay safe during a fire emergency.

Everyone, young and old, needs to take fire safety and prevention seriously and continuously work to make their communities and home environments safe from fire.
